Preface:
I have had a lot of DJ consoles, but as I write this blog, my primary devices are the Pioneer DDJ-SZ2 and a Rane Seventy-Two with two turntables. I still enjoy the feel of vinyl, but when performing at a gig, I prefer the DDJ-SZ2. On several occasions, I wanted to practice with my controller, but the time needed to switch over all cables was not worth the trouble. My goal was to have a workbench that allowed me to hit the power button and go to work on either setup.
All the equipment I’m using can be swapped out, but the general idea is to have the right components to implement an all-in-one setup successfully.
What’s Under the Table:
- I would suggest grabbing a rack-mountable frame to mount underneath your table. Be sure to allocate enough cables and overall depth/rack space if you add larger devices.
- It was essential to protect all the devices connected to the chain. I chose the Furman M-8×2 for the eight outlets in the rear and 1 in the front. The additional outlet in the front was convenient when connecting my camera or par lights.
- The most important part of this setup is the Behringer MX882-V2. I connected both devices via XLR to the rear of the mixer and set levels.
What’s On Top:
- There are hundreds of monitoring speakers to choose from, but I can only recommend what I decided, which was the JBL Professional 305P MKII. If you are on a tight budget, consider the original 305P, which was also available in different colors, and sounded great. The JBL 3 series also comes in 6″ and 8″ speaker options.
Connected:
- If you are comfortable with a soldering iron, I recommend purchasing a 25ft or 50ft XLR cable and adapters to make your cables.
- I purchased two 3ft USB cables with different colors to identify the mixer it is connected to.
